Last week, New Zealand revealed its 20th annual Bird of the Year, with a record number of votes and a win for the kārearea (the New Zealand falcon). The government-backed campaign raises awareness about the plight of endangered species, turning a light-hearted vote into a meaningful moment for conservation. As well as earning the annual title, the kārearea will become the subject of a new waiata (Māori language song) that will be released to the public.
