Earlier this month, over 85,000 participants from global governments and organisations convened in Dubai to discuss the critical action needed to tackle climate change. Discussion topics this year included renewable energy, climate adaptation, and loss and damage. Apolitical's event on 'Building Climate Capable Governments' inspired several pledges from global leaders to upskill their public servants in climate. Read article 1.1 Global greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.1% from 2022 to 2023. The COP28 agreement reiterates the need to cut global emissions by 43% before 2030 compared to 2019 levels. Climate concept corner Breaking down the jargon   'Unabated fossil fuels', as defined by the IPCC, refers to fossil fuels that “are produced and used without interventions that substantially reduce the greenhouse gasses emitted throughout the life-cycle”, for example, through carbon capture and storage.
